on UIOneOff_Container”>Music in Arabia is transcending all kinds of borders and boundaries this year, bringing together this Ramadan two of the Arab Worlds alternative musical entities. No other than Cairo-based Eftekasat Jazz band is featuring Ruba Saqr, a soulful singer and songwriter from neighboring Jordan, in an attempt to blend oriental Jazz moods with original Sufi chants and Sufi-influenced compositions.

Eftekasat’s team and Ruba Saqr will be fusing several musical visions in one performance, adding a Jazzy and modern feel to the ancient Sufi tradition that has thrived over the past hundreds of years in North Africa, the Greater Syria area, and across the world. Both musical sides have had previous experiences with creating a new Sufi sound, and this Ramadan they are bringing together both their visions into a series of musical evenings dedicated to celebrating Sufism and the sound of Jazz in a new contemporary dress.

Since its early beginnings in 2002, Eftekasat’s Sufi-Jazz fusions were crowned with success by launching the band’s “Mouled Sidi El-Latini” debut album in 2006. The album comprised an interesting collection from their original compositions with a special approach to Sufi sounds stemming from the local Egyptian scene. Ruba Saqr, on the other hand, comes from a long family lineage of Sufi teachers (from her mother’s side). At a very early age, Ruba has been raised in Sufi atmospheres bringing her closer to Sufi thought and chants revolving around self cleansing and the love of God. This has influenced her songwriting approach, where she says she writes “from the heart.”

Eftekasat has recently concluded a tour in Europe and the US, taking the band to California’s San Jose Jazz Festival, the BANSKO Jazz Festival in Europe, and the NISVILLE 25th Jazz Festival in Serbia. Ruba’s latest activities in Amman include her appearance as guest artist with world guitarist and Jazz musician Jan Akkerman from Holland a few weeks ago. Before that she took part in Music Matbakh last year, a UK-led Pan Arab musical project that introduced her to two of Eftekasat’s team members.
